How to choose what diet is best for you

There are so many different diets available to choose from. And every person talking about them thinks their diet is the best. And maybe it really is the best for them—but is it the best for you? Follow these steps to help you determine what diet really is best for YOU.

Who is talking about this diet? Is this person or organization trustworthy? Are they just promoting something they can sell and make money? Or is it beneficial?

Does this diet have any solid science backing it up? A simple Google Scholar search or a search with the National Institute of Health is a great place to start.

What exactly am I looking to achieve with a diet? Pinpoint exactly what you want (weight loss, strength, lowered blood sugar, lowered cholesterol, etc.).

Research what diets are proven or evidenced-based to address what you are looking to achieve. This can get tricky—because some health conditions can have multiple diets that good, solid research shows can achieve your goal.

Reframe your diet approach to think about this as a life-long shift instead of a quick fix.

Think about what you are willing and able to do, especially if this is a life-long and sustainable change instead of something temporary.

Narrow down a couple of options that you believe address your goals and are attainable for you.

Talk about these changes with the people who can help you and whose opinion you trust—maybe a family member who you share meals with or a friend.

Get clearance from your doctor, if that applies to you.

Ask your registered dietitian nutritionist! If you don’t have one yet—find one! They are accessible to you and are the nutrition experts. Even if you’ve already settled on a diet choice, they can give you the tools you need to be successful and help you make sure this is something you adapt to and get the results you’re looking for. They are here for you!
